A large and early (1920's) black pot with designs. Pot is 10" High and 12.25" Diameter. Mouth is 6.5" Wide. The designs are on the upper 1/3 of the pot. Maria was persuaded to sign her early works ar "Marie" as it was thought the signature would have a better appeal.
I strongly suggest that you go to the web site: MariaMartinezPottery.com and read of her history and works.
Her works were signed simply "Marie" in the early to mid 1920's.
This work shows signs of it's age and use though the wear is honest and does not detract from the work. There is one very small nick on the neck opening.
From the web site: "Maria Martinez became so admired for her skill that she was specially invited to the White House four times, and she received honorary doctorates from the University of Colorado and New Mexico State University. She is considered one of the most influental Native Americans of the 20th Century."
This important work has been in a collection for many years. We will be including some other fine works by other Native artists in this auction.
